Bike MS 2009 - Volunteers

Volunteering for the Ride

Come join us June 11-13 for a weekend of fun out on the farm in DeKalb, IL!  Devote your weekend to the movement towards a world free of MS.  Some volunteer opportunities include:

  • Full Weekend Crew
    • Bike Parking & Gear - Assist riders in storing their  bicycles and gear.  Monitor area to ensure the security of items. 
    • Clean-Up & Break-Down - Help tear down and clean up the event site.  Minimal lifting required.
    • Concierge - Be the 'answer to every question' and assist participants, volunteers, friends & family members with general information about the event and the local area.
    • Food Service - Help serve food and beverages to participants, guests and volunteers.  Minimal lifting required.
    • Join the Movement - Provide valuable information about the Chapter on how people can get involved to create a world free of MS at information tables.
    • Massage Therapists - Comfort our cyclists’ weary muscles throughout their journeys. Massage therapy volunteers must show proof of massage therapist license or be a student supervised by an instructor.
    • Medical Volunteers - Trained medical professionals are needed at the start, finish, overnight, and on the route (at rest stops or on bikes) to monitor injuries and well-being of the riders.  
    • Motorcycle Safety Crew - Motorcyclists are often the first to come across a cyclist in need of aid. Must have your own motorcycle and provide proof of a valid driver’s license and motorcycle insurance.
    • Packet Pick-up - Greet and check-in riders.  Distribute T-shirts and rider jerseys to participants. Minimal lifting required.
    • Parking & Traffic Control - Help direct vehicle traffic so riders stay safe as they proceed through their routes.
    • Rest Stops- Devote your time to helping the cyclists  in their journeys through the farms of DeKalb. Distribute food and beverages to riders. They need your help to make it through their mile goal!
    • Route Clean-Up - Follow the 'caboose' and help clean up the rest stops as they close.  Heavy lifting is required and must be comfortable driving a large truck.
    • Route Communications - Be an amateur radio operator, posted at check points along the route and rest stops. Work with Net Control to provide reliable and consistent communication throughout the tour.
    • Route Marking - Be responsible for putting up and taking down route signage. 
    • Route Support Dispatchers - Experienced emergency dispatchers are a key component in our Net Control operations in fielding and dispatching route support.
    • Support and Gear Volunteers (SAGs) - Drive support vehicles along the Bike MS route, communicate needs on a centralized communication system, and transport tired riders and/or bikes if needed; SAG volunteers will attend SAG Training prior to the event.  Driver’s license, proof of insurance & driving history report required.
    • Supply Truck and Cargo Van Drivers - The lifelines of the Tour de Farms, a driver and assistant are assigned to each supply truck or cargo van to transport, restock and deliver supply trucks along the route where they are needed; supply truck driver volunteers must show proof of valid Illinois Drivers License, CDL License required if driving a semi.
    • Upload - Help load event vehicles and assist with other event preparations on Wednesday June 9th & Thursday June 10th.  Heavy lifting required.
    • Volunteer Check-in - Support volunteers throughout the Tour de Farms by checking them in; handing out T-shirts, nametags, meal wristbands; assisting them in finding their assigned areas; and thanking each and every volunteer for coming out
    • Ham Radio Opperators- Are you familiar with how to opperate a Ham Radio and would be willing to donate your time to one or both days of the Bike MS: Tour de Farms? Check out what different areas we need your help with >>Ham Operators<<


Opportunities Before the Ride Include:
  • Packet Pick-up- Help out during one of the scheduled packet pick-ups at various sites throughout the Chicagoland area. Dates and locations TBD
  • Office Assistant- Come to the Greater Illinois Chapter office and help with general office needs such as mailings and phone calls.
